About
Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is waist circumference divided by hip circumference. It is an anthropometric description of body-fat distribution, not a direct body-composition measurement or a stand-alone assessment of cardiovascular, metabolic, or weight-related disease.
Formula
Interpretation
Input units: Enter both circumferences in centimeters or both in inches. The ratio is unitless; values are also normalized to centimeters for display.
Measurement: The WHO protocol measures waist at the midpoint between the lower margin of the last palpable rib and the top of the iliac crest, and hip around the widest portion of the buttocks, with the tape level and not compressing the skin.
Worked example: Waist 90 cm and hip 100 cm gives WHR = 90 ÷ 100 = 0.90.
Applicable population: Adult anthropometric assessment. Reference thresholds vary by sex, age, ethnicity, population, guideline, and measurement protocol.
Limitations: Pregnancy, abdominal distension, positioning, clothing, breathing phase, and tape placement can change the measurement. This result does not label obesity or metabolic risk.
